First it is important on how you set up the breeding tank. The following is my picture of a standard breeding tank.
It is a standard 10 gallon, with sponge filters, heater, live plants.  Notice the bare bottom.  A MUST in betta breeding. The only thing that I have changed over the years is the amount of water in the tank. Now I use much less water.

This Next picture is of a pair of bettas that are in their spawning embrace.
